While my son was in the Special Care Nursery after his premature birth the nurses would often swaddle him. He seemed to really enjoy this and I continued with swaddling once we returned home. Pediatricians recommend “back to sleep” and advise against placing blankets in the crib in order to promote a safe sleep environment. Once my baby started rolling onto his tummy I transitioned him from a swaddle to a Halo SleepSack wearable blanket.

The Halo company was established after founder Bill Schmid and his wife Cathy tragically lost their firstborn to SIDS. The American Academy of Pediatrics began recommending the use of wearable blankets in 2005. Currently, there are over 1,400 hospitals that now use Halo SleepSack products to promote safe sleep practices to parents.

Halo has a great website that has a Frequently Asked Questions section that is really helpful. There is also a video that you can watch to learn how to use the Halo SleepSack. In order to purchase the correct SleepSack size, you can refer to their Size Chart, which is also available on the website. (I included the SleepSack Size Chart further down in this review.)

The Halo SleepSack wearable blanket is a great alternative to loose blankets in the crib that can be dangerous for a baby. Essentially, the SleepSack functions as a wearable blanket that is safe and provides a way to keep your baby nice and warm. I feel much better knowing my baby is snug as a bug in a rug, especially on cold subzero Minnesota nights. Simply place the SleepSack over your baby’s regular sleepwear and they are ready for bed.

I really appreciate the thought and care that went into designing the Halo SleepSack. The design of this product provides ample room for babies to kick and the International Hip Dysplasia Institute has recognized the SleepSack as being “Hip Healthy.” Changing a diaper is simple because the zipper is inverted and the SleepSack does not need to be removed. This is a great feature, as there have been a few occasions where I’ve had to change a diaper in the middle of the night. I’m all about a quick diaper change that doesn’t disturb my baby too much! The SleepSacks are all sleeveless in order to help prevent overheating, which can be very dangerous to an infant.

The SleepSack is made out of a variety of materials such as cotton, micro-fleece, and cotton sweater knit, just to name a few. This has been a nice feature, as I’m able to purchase the most appropriate material for the SleepSacks depending on the time of year. With winter looming, I just purchased my daughter a couple of the micro-fleece ones.  All of the materials that are used are breathable and are able to wick moisture to avoid overheating. For those who are interested, there is even an option to purchase a Halo SleepSack that is made out of 100% certified organically-grown cotton. As expected, the organic SleepSacks cost more.

While working on this review I learned about the TOG value. Each SleepSack is given a TOG value, which is the international unit of measure of thermal insulation. The TOG value is used to show a blanket’s thermal effectiveness, which is essentially how well the blanket keeps you warm. Lighter weight fabrics have a lower TOG value than fabrics that are heavier, and thus warmer. You can check out the TOG value table below.

Now a quick word about care. The SleepSacks are machine washable and the manufacturer recommends washing them with like colors. They also suggest turning them inside out and zipping prior to washing. You can tumble dry them on low.

They come in different sizes, so it’s pretty easy to find one that will comfortably and safely fit your baby. I’ve included the Halo Size Chart for your convenience. Also, they are made out of cute material with many different patterns to choose from.

I highly recommend the Halo SleepSack wearable blanket to all parents who want their babies to sleep as safe and sound as possible. My son, and now my daughter, have used the Halo SleepSack and they both have slept like champs!
